J.J. McMillian, Hillsdale Sports Superfan, Passes Away
The Hillsdale community is mourning the loss of J.J. McMillian, who passed away on Thursday. Known for his infectious enthusiasm and unwavering support for local sports, J.J. left a lasting impact on Hillsdale College athletics and the surrounding community.
For many years, J.J. worked multiple part-time jobs, including stints at Walmart, Kroger, and Burger King. Beyond his work, he was best known as a devoted fan and ball boy for Hillsdale College Charger Athletics football games, as well as a familiar presence at Hillsdale Hornet and Charger events. During the Hornets’ 2014 quarterfinal run, J.J. even led the cheering section, embodying the spirit and energy of the games.
J.J. had a rare gift for connecting with everyone he met. He knew countless names and nicknames, greeted fans with excitement, and made each event feel special. Whether at tailgate parties or on the other side of the gym, J.J.’s presence brought people together and created a sense of community that was uniquely Hillsdale.
Local sports fans often remember figures like J.J.—dedicated superfans who become the heart and soul of their communities. Just as Jonesville had Keith Block and Waldron had Don Zorn, Hillsdale had J.J. McMillian. His commitment and enthusiasm made the community stronger and more connected, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered for years to come.
